The Top 300 Selling Comic Books For May 2004
This list comes from digging through sales figures, asking too many questions and using Diamond Comics information. The snotty comments in white are from deep in Cory's sick twisted little brain.
1 ASTONISHING X-MEN #1* $2.99 MAR 209,389
It looks like the "Events" that both DC and Marvel are putting together are succeeding. In this case the comic is utterly powered by the writer, Joss Whedon (who was the creator of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel TV series). If you ever liked the X-Men, this is the comic to get. Whedon shows that a comic can be accessable to new readers as well as touching on the past while telling a great story. John Cassady's art is well suited to the story, not overly flashy, but making the events in the comic seem like a movie on paper. Highly recommended and probably the only Main X-Men book you should be reading.
2 SUPERMAN #205 $2.50 DC 208,105
More event stuff, this time it's Jim Lee art that is driving the sales. Even though I am not a Jim Lee fan, this comic is...interesting. It is very clear that there is a big story going on, but it is starting very slow. This is VERY clearly written as a collected trade, and each individual issue is unsatisfying, but could add up to a whole that is worth reading.
3 SUPERMAN/BATMAN #10 $2.95 DC 178,865
More of the Michael Turner Supergirl story, and while I like the story, that art is SO focused on endless sexy shots of Supergirl, I feel like I'm reading the old "Penthouse Comix" with someone coloring over the nudity.
4 SECRET WAR BOOK TWO (Of 5) $3.99 MAR 116,611
Another comic selling on the strength of the writer alone. Bendis is Marvel's workhorse, but unlike previous writers who churned out 3 or more books a month, his stuff has shown no drop in quality. Secret Wars is an espionage book, set in the Marvel Universe with Marvel super-heroes and reads like a well-done John LeCarre novel. Highly recommended and one I can't wait for the trade on because I am a big fanboy.
5 UNCANNY X-MEN #444 $2.25 MAR 112,129
Alan Davis and Chris Claremont on an X-Book again, but without the odd, British humor of their run on Excalibur. Davis is one of my favorite artists, and Claremont does his best work when paired with an artist who is able to develop his stories (like Davis, Byrne, Cockrum or Paul Smith), but Mike Farmer is inking with a VERY heavy hand, and Claremont seems bogged down in his own stylistic problems. I wanted to like this comic, but it just didn't do anything for me as a read.
6 X-MEN #157 $2.25 MAR 107,185
And now, Xorn! Chuck Austin continues to show that either he or Marvel editorial had no clue what Grant Morrison was doing with the book. I officially give up on this comic.
7 MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN #2 $2.99 MAR 99,320
I read where Marvel thought that this comic would be selling at Jim Lee Batman numbers when they put it out. It is selling VERY well, but Jim Lee numbers? Has Terry Dodson HAD a huge hit before? Mark Millar has had a few, but that is more because of the Ultimates than a huge outpouring of fan love for him. The comic itself? Made for Trades.
8 ULTIMATE X-MEN #45 $2.25 MAR 96,698
9 ULTIMATE X-MEN #46 $2.25 MAR 96,652
The end of the Bendis story, and really the first Bendis story I haven't been completely enamored of. Since I haven't much cared for any writer's take on the characters, I think it's just that I am X-Men-ed out.
10 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #58 $2.25 MAR 90,963
11 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #59 $2.25 MAR 89,863
More great Spider-Man work by Bendis, and like always, great issues with perfect characterization, although the ending of the Doc Oc story just didn't work the best for me.
12 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #507 $2.25 MAR 81,944
This is the start of the Finale of the "Ezkiel" story, which is the main thing in JMS's run on Amazing that has seemed utterly out of place in the book. Here's hoping that when it is done, JMS gets back to the GOOD stuff he has done on the comic.
13 BATMAN #627 $2.25 DC 76,885
The new story by Judd Winnik is good, and while the art is good, I haven't heard of the artist before, so splashing "Wizard Award Winning" all over the ads does nothing for me. NOTHING. Still, a solid Batman tale and Mildly recommended.
14 NEW X-MEN ACADEMY X #1 $2.99 MAR 76,416
The exact same book as "The New Mutants" with a different name at it sells three times as many copies. Amazing. Just amazing.
15 BATMAN #628 $2.25 DC 74,348
16 EXCALIBUR #1 $2.99 MAR 71,757
I ever-so wanted to like this comic. Then they took the artist I liked off of it. Then, they didn't have the cool characters from Excalibur in it. Then it came out. Now, I don't like it. But I wanted to, and that is what is important.
17 JLA #98 $2.25 DC 69,965
18 JLA #99 $2.25 DC 69,058
Finally, it is over, and as with most Byrne plotted stories, it ends when the heroes figure out who they need to punch in the face. I noticed that the credits changed for the last few issues from "Written By Chris Claremont, and Drawn by John Byrne" to "By Claremont, Byrne and Ordway". I also saw an asterisk by Claremont's name on the last issue of the run, but no explanation for it, so I will give the explanation:
* - My story was hijacked to hype Byrne's new crappy Doom Patrol comic that will not sell to a single person under the age of 40 and his stupid vampires vs super-heroes obsession. So, I scripted it, took the money and went back to X-Books.
BTW, the over/under on Doom Patrol is 16 issues. Place your bets now.
19 WOLVERINE #15 $2.25 MAR 68,728
Still the best run on a Wolverine comic in the character's history, and the only story using the "Weapons X" stuff that hasn't made me want to beat my head against a wall. Highly recommended.
20 TEEN TITANS #11 $2.50 DC 67,813
This one has probably settled down to its average level. It was a huge hit when it started, and it's still one of DC's biggest books, but it isn't driven by a "hot artist", as most of the other DC hits seem to be. It is a perfectly average super-hero team book, and if you like those. Mildly recommended to super-hero fans.
21 SUPREME POWER #10 (MR) $2.99 MAR 63,292
22 AVENGERS #82 $2.25 MAR 55,711
23 AVENGERS #83 $2.25 MAR 55,280
I know it is very fashionable to bash Chuck Austin on-line, but DAMN these issues of the Avengers have been horrid. I can see why they are stopping the series and starting again, mostly to wash off the stink of just how horrible these last two stories have been. Here's hoping Bendis and crew can bring back what has been Marvel's best team book from the current unreadable mess it is in.
24 DAREDEVIL #60 $2.99 MAR 54,012
A fantastic issue that slams home just how far Daredevil has fallen, without being and endless mope-fest. Bendis shows that he has had a plan all along, and tells a great story along the way. His best work, currently, and highly recommended.
25 SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #14 $2.25 MAR 51,036
I read an interview with the editor of this comic, who said that he sees this as a book aimed at a younger audience for Spider-Man, and will be where the classic villains will be showing up, since JMS doesn't want to use them. Too bad that super-hero stuff is not what writer Paul Jenkins is best at, since he is so much better at the character work.
26 FANTASTIC FOUR #513 $2.25 MAR 50,936
A two part story with Spider-man the recalls the goofier, fun issues of Lee/Kirby's work on the team without being slavishing adherant to it. The best of the FF was when it would switch from drama to humor, sometimes within a single issue, and this is one of those stories that shows that comic books can still be funny and fun to read. Highly recommended.
27 CONAN #4 $2.99 DAR 50,759
28 ADVS O/SUPERMAN #628 $2.50 DC 49,575
29 ACTION COMICS #815 $2.50 DC 49,483
DC has to be happy that they have finally figured out creative teams that get the Superman comics selling again. Action has been a wonderful surprise, since Chuck Austin's stuff on other books has gone from OK to unreadable, but his Superman is a lot of fun to read. Adventures is more serious, and more "script heavy", but they are both solidly entertaining super-hero comics, and it has been a while since the Superman books have been this consistantly good.
30 ROBIN #126 $2.25 DC 49,083
From a book selling around 19,000 copies and not even in the top 125 to a top 30 book, and even though we all KNOW the girl Robin won't last to the end of the year, the story itself is well-done. If not for the msytic bad-guy (who never seems to go away) this comic would be highly recommended, but as is, it still feels like two different comics under one cover, and is only mildly recommended.
31 PUNISHER #6 (MR) $2.99 MAR 48,576
The last issue of the first story arc, and about as brutally violent and honest about that violent as you can get. Ennis's new, serious approach to the character has won me over, and I am starting to think that he is the best person to work on the character. Highly recommended.
32 SECRET WAR BOOK ONE COMM ED $3.99 MAR 47,792
Reprinting the first sold out issue with a shiny cover. Yeah, shiny covers are back. Bastards.
33 WOLVERINE/PUNISHER #3 (Of 5) $2.99 MAR 47,699
And the trade will be out in September. I wonder if the people who buy Marvel's mini-series know that they'll be collected as trades the month after they are done? I LIKE the idea, since I prefer trades, and it doesn't seem to be hurting Marvel's sales.
34 FIRESTORM #1 $2.50 DC 46,292
Not a bad start for a DC #1. Marvel's #1s usually take off with more heft, but this is a character who hasn't had his own series in a decade, hasn't had very many guest appearances in a long time, and has a creative team that, while good, isn't Hot. Is the book any good? Don't know. It was sold out everywhere, another good sign. Hopefully DC won't let this one fade into oblivion as it does so many other of it's series.
35 DISTRICT X #1 $2.99 MAR 45,439
The first Marvel Mutant title under the Marvel Knights line that I know of, and for an X-Men #1, this is NOT a good start. Then again, Bishop has always been a bland fringe character with a horribly confusing origin, so I'm not surprised a book featuring him isn't a runaway hit.
36 INCREDIBLE HULK #72 $2.25 MAR 45,385
As I'm writing this, I was about to say that Bruce Jones's work on this title is starting to get a bit stale, and his unorthadox approach has gone about as far as it can, and he should look into changing it up a bit or run the risk of being a one trick pony...and he signs up with DC for a two year exclusive contract. Jones made a HUGE splash returning to comics on The Hulk, and I have no doubt his horror-tinged work will do well at DC. He has also had a very good run on the Hulk and the entire run is Highly recommended, even though it suffers from "X-Files disease" toward the end.
37 FLASH #210 $2.25 DC 45,354
I still read it, and I'm still unengaged by it. Wally West is no longer a likeable character I am interested in, so it comes off as a very average super-hero comic for folks who don't mind that.
38 WITCHBLADE/WOLVERINE ONE-SHOT $2.99 IMA 43,863
A cross company team up that didn't even break into the top 30! With WOLVERINE no less!! Part of it could be that no one has given a damn about Witchblade in a good five years.
39 PULSE #3 $2.99 MAR 43,655
A great comic, by Marvel's main workhorse, Brian Michael Bendis. Picking up the threads from the Alias comic and putting them into the setting of the Daily Bugle (one of Marvel's most interesting workplaces) gives the series a super-hero vibe so it can survive. Highly recommended.
40 OUTSIDERS #12 $2.50 DC 43,432
A typically average super-hero team book that doesn't insult your intelligence as you read it, but also makes little to no impact on you when you are done reading. Perfectly biodegradable.
41 JSA #61 $2.50 DC 43,086
My favorite Super-hero team book, this one dealing with the Hal Jordan as the Spectre from the viewpoint that his attempts as redemption are in conflict with the Spectre's mission as the spirit of vengance. Leading into a bigger story later, but still a highly entertaining read and highly recommended.
42 DARKNESS/HULK ONE-SHOT $2.99 IMA 40,403
Another crossover with one of Top Cow's no-longer-popular characters.
43 JUSTICE LEAGUE O/AMERICA ANOTHER NAIL #1 (Of 3) $5.95 DC 40,349
A sequel to Alan Davis's EXCELLENT mini-series The Nail. Davis's art is so much better here than on Uncanny X-Men, and his writing is much better than the ones he draws for other writers, this mini-series is highly recommended, but you KNOW it will be collected into a trade within a month of two of completion.
44 OFFICIAL HANDBOOK O/T MARVEL UNIVERSE X-MEN 2004 $3.99 MAR 39,380

Odd little story about this self-published book, the creator was a guy who wrote in to Cerebus all the time and started his own fantasy comic. It is very ernest, but it's really only for hard-core fantasy fans.

Re-orders for this Kurt Busiek "Prestige" mini-series. Now, if was being sold by Image, they'd list it as a graphic novel and claim it was the best selling one of the month.

275 MINISTRY O/SPACE #3 (Of 3) (RES) $2.95 IMA 1,299
Delayed by over two years, and these are re-orders, but it still only sold about one third of the first two issues. Delays did a LOT to kill a lot of comic stores in the 90's, and now it just kills comic series. This is also a 3 issue mini-series, so it is harder to re-package as a trade paperback. It strikes me as just poor planning on the creator's part. Was the last part worth the two year wait? Of course not. Nothing could be.

278 MICHAEL TURNER PRESENTS ASPEN #3 (Of 3) $2.99 ASP 1,284
More re-orders. I have to say that Michael Turner should think very strongly about sticking with working on DC characters for a while, since his own stuff sells about 1/4th of his DC work, and he started by drawing typical "Top Cow" top heavy comics. He's also not a very good writer, and his "Fathom" was pretty much unreadable. Aspen isn't much better.

A comic that is probably about 10 years old now (I'm not sure, but it is at LEAST 7 years old) and is still selling with little to no advertising. I have never been able to make it through an issue, due to the horrid lettering, but anyone who is this successful deserves a bit of respect.
