The Top Selling Comics For January 2002

1 BATMAN 10 CENT ADVENTURE 654,128

I would think this was a great idea to get people to read comics if it weren't for the fact that it is the first part of a 10 part story that goes through at least 7 comic books. THIS IS WHAT DROVE PEOPLE AWAY FROM COMICS YOU MORONS!!

2 ORIGIN #6 166,997

In a way, this book has done amazingly well. If you look, you'll see it outsold the very much overhyped Frank Miller Batman book, even though the Batman book will eventually outsell it due to re-orders and second printings. But still, Marvel has got to be pretty happy about this. And when it comes out as a collect book, I'll buy it.

3 DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN #2 (Of 3) 155,322

I have read very few bad things about this mini-series, and then only from people who dislike Miller's work anyway. But, like with all mini-series, I'm going to buy the book version. It's easier to read, better to store and I HATE waiting between chapters of a story.

4 ULTIMATES #1 149,289

Basically The Ultimate Avengers. It'll be interesting to see how they pull it off. Ultimate Spider-Man works because it strips away all the stuff that built up on 40 years of Spider-Man and got back to its roots. I don't care for Ultimate X-Men because it feels more like, "What's different?" This is by Millar, who might just make it "What's different," which would be a shame. Lee, Kirby and Ditko were able to create enduring characters because they were simple to understand. (Thor is the Norse god of thunder who is in the body of a crippled man, Captain America is a super-soldier out of his own time, etc...)

5 NEW X-MEN #122 109,246

I think this is the lowest this book has been in the top ten in ages. Grant Morrison is an incredible writer who has made this the Must Read book it should be. Not just highly recommended, but mindblowingly wonderful to read for even non-superhero readers.

6 MOMENT OF SILENCE 104,275

This is Marvel's Story tribute to 9/11, after their poster book came out. It will be interesting to see how these 9/11 books read. Done well they could be incredible classics. Done poorly, and they be like all the crappy hunger relief books of the mid 80's, and just as forgettable.

7 UNCANNY X-MEN #402 101,145

I find myself losing interest in this book, which is a shame with New X-Men being so good. The 400th issue just sort of sat there, and the "silent" issue didn't work at all. I know that being compared to Grant Morrison is rough, but this one is on the chopping block if the "Banshee as a terrorist" doesn't work as a story.

8 ULTIMATE X-MEN #14 97,690

Second part of the story introducing Gambit. I hate Gambit.

9 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #39 90,788

#39? Where's #37? I don't review books that never come out.

Oh, and I REALLY have Gambit as a character.

10 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #17 79,203

An over 10,000 sales drop between #9 and #10. And this IS the best Spider-Man book. Bendis writes the book a bit slow, but his dialgoue feel real, the stories feel fresh and Bagley's art is clear at telling the story without a lot of unnessesary flash. I know this is supposed to be aimed at younger readers who don't know the character, but it just goes to show that all that matters is a good story. Highly Recommended.

11 X-TREME X-MEN #9 77,767

Claremont X-Men. You know the drill. You either like his stuff or you don't and nothing will change your mind.

12 GREEN ARROW #12 75,978

Also terribly late, but the last part of Quiver just didn't work for me. Too much mystic mumbo jumbo for a guy who shoots arrows at people. The dialogue was wonderful, and most of the story worked, but the ending...just didn't work.

13 GI JOE #3 75,397

Didn't read it in the 80's. Not reading it now.

14 WOLVERINE #172 71,574
15 JLA #62 63,345

A near 20,000 sales drop between #14 and #15. I would like to think that someone notices this stuff. Oh, and this issue was kinda mediocre. Liked the art, but story was just kinda...there. This became a huge book because as you read it, you felt like "Oh My God! What is going to happen next!?!" Now it feels like, "Oh, they are dealing with the Earth blowing up again." It's not the level of danger it's how the story makes you feel by drawing you in. And JLA doesn't draw me in anymore.

16 AVENGERS #50 56,009

Speaking of not being drawn in...I have figured out why I'm not as enamored of this comic anymore. It's not the Perez left, it's that all the character interaction has left. The Avengers works when you see them interacting in the Stan Lee soap opera style, but since the Kang story started, its been one long, confusing fight scene. Busiek has said this is his last arc, and while I love his work, I think it is time for him to go.

17 PUNISHER #8$2.99 MAR54,305

I honestly think this is the highest 50,000 cut off in a long time. While it looks as if a lot of comics have moved up the sales charts (which I'll discuss below) it also looks like a LOT of the jump in sales is from stores pouring a lot more money into the top ten and cutting orders on everything else.

18 DETECTIVE COMICS #766 49,607

The best Batman book by far. Rucka is crafting interesting stories that read like novels. The moody art and toned down coloring add to the feeling of seriousness to the stories without being pretentious. I ignore the backups tho. Highly recommended

19 PETER PARKER SPIDER-MAN #39 48,380

The little Spidey Book that could. For all the hype Amazing Spider-Man gets, this book is turning out great Spider-Man stories on a regular basis that don't have "shocking implications about his origins" or "change everything about his secret identity." They are simple short stories told with heart and understanding of the character. Highly recommended.

20 DAREDEVIL #29 48,012

Bendis is getting a lot of hype on this book, and while I love his stuff, this book is kind of leaving me a bit cold. The "silent" issue was OK, but not great, and the new storyline seems to be getting off to a slow start.

21 FANTASTIC FOUR #51 47,714

I know Pachelo is considered a great artist by a lot of people, and the book is getting good reviews, but the recent "Big Cosmic Menace" story felt like so much of a rehash of the first Galactus story, Kirby should be paid royalties. I see that Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo are the next creative team on the book, and I can't wait...too bad it's 9 months away.

22 BATMAN #599 47,209
23 X-FORCE #124 45,670
24 FATHOM #13 44,886

After about a year off due to artist illness, and it still charts this high. Amazing. Of course, I don't read it, so I don't know if it was worth the wait, but I doubt it. Not a whole lot could be.

25 ELEKTRA #7 44,400
26 ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #600 43,692
27 SPAWN #118 43,281

This book now officially sells less than half of what it did at this time last year. For any other book it would be time to totally shake it up and bring in a new creative team, but I think Spawn will just continue to grind slowly down as Toddy Mac becomes less and less of a fan favorite over time, and his style becomes as dated as Rich Buckler's aping of Kirby and Neal Adams.

28 IRON MAN #50 43,097

Mike Grell is coming on as the new writer, and I hope he's still as good as he was when doing Jon Sable Freelance and Green Arrow. He is an incredibly good writer with older characters, making them feel important to a younger audience.

45 SUPERMAN MAN OF STEEL #122$2.25 DC34,500
46 CATWOMAN #3$2.50 DC33,348

I was going to drop this before it came out, due to not much caring for the last series by the end, and wanting to cut costs, but I got the first two issues and was blown away by how good it is. A tight script that doesn't feel like a cliché, clear, clean art inked by Mike Allred and another in the "crime novel" genre of comics. Highly recommended.

47 ELEKTRA & WOLVERINE #3$5.95 MAR32,815
48 MARVEL MANGAVERSE SPIDER-MAN #1$2.25 MAR32,626

Cool. I'm waiting for the trade, tho. I do that with all Marvel mini-series now.

63 MARVEL MANGAVERSE AVENGERS #1$2.25 MAR28,467
64 MARVEL KNIGHTS DOUBLE SHOT #4 (MR)$2.99 MAR28,439

Sure, I believe that the 4th issue will be out this month. Too bad the first three aren't out yet. Wankers.

65 MARVEL MANGAVERSE FANTASTIC FOUR #1$2.25 MAR28,434
66 WITCHBLADE #53 (RES)$2.50 IMA28,019
67 DEADPOOL FUNERAL FOR A FREAK #2$2.25 MAR27,660

77 POWER COMPANY SKYROCKET$2.50 DC25,427
78 POWER COMPANY BORK$2.50 DC25,384
79 POWER COMPANY WITCHFIRE$2.50 DC25,247

I hate launches like this. I wouldn't mind trying a new Kurt Busiek series, but in order to put it on my list, I have to buy $15 worth of books just BEFORE the first issue. And with sales like this, it looks like most people feel the way I do.

80 YOUNG JUSTICE #41$2.50 DC24,889

I gave the new team a try. They suck too. Time to put this baby to sleep.

132 SIGIL #20$2.95 CRO14,191
133 LADY DEATH LAST RITES #4 (Of 4)$2.99 CHA14,182

She's getting a redesign by J. Scott Campbell...and to be honest, you know your character is only selling for one reason when J. Scott Campbell makes the bustline smaller when he redesigns it.

134 MERIDIAN #20$2.95 CRO14,078
135 SIMPSONS COMICS #66$2.50 BON13,917
136 SAM & TWITCH #27 (RES)$2.50 IMA13,898

Jesus Ghod, why do they even bother publishing it with Bendis not doing it. I actually looked through one of the issues Toddy Mac wrote and I thought I would have to seek professional help. It's painfully apparent that he's never read anything but a cereal box when you try to suffer through his dialouge. Recommended to avoid like the plague.

137 LUCIFER #22 (MR)$2.50 DC13,691
138 AZRAEL AGENT O/T BAT #86$2.50 DC13,658
139 IMPULSE #82$2.50 DC13,648

It doesn't look good for these two books, although it seems they will publish Azrael no matter how bad the book is or how low the sales go. I recently dropped Impulse because it just wasn't much fun anymore, and the thing that made to book so good was the sense of FUN it had.

140 HUNTER AGE OF MAGIC #7 (MR)$2.50 DC13,459
141 ATHENA INC BEGINNING$5.95 IMA13,223
142 CODENAME KNOCKOUT #9 (MR)$2.50 DC12,978

Still a goofy fun adult themed comic, and it looks like sales are slowly going up. I can't say it's GREAT, but it is a fun read, which nice art. Mildly recommended.

143 VAMPI #15 REG ED$2.99 HAR12,803
144 VAMPIRELLA #6 REG ED (Note Price)$2.99 HAR12,742

Amazing that the two versions of the character both sell about the same. Not even the Superman books can say that. I don't like either of them, though.

145 ORION #22$2.50 DC12,643

It still pisses me off that this book failed. Simonson did some incredible work here, and this comic was one of the few that always blew me away every month. I don't know why he doesn't have the fan following he used to when his work has improved. Highly recommended not just for this issue, but to dig up the back issues you missed.

146 SAVAGE DRAGON #95$2.95 IMA12,411
147 AMERICAN CENTURY #11 (MR)$2.50 DC12,100

Chaykin had a GREAT start to this series, then just seemed to run out of gas quickly. I wonder if it is because he started the series in case there was a writer's strike in Hollywood.

148 AGENCY #5$2.95 IMA12,100
149 BATMAN GOTHAM ADVENTURES #46$1.99 DC11,868
150 SHI THROUGH ASHES$2.99 CRU11,680
151 FUTURAMA COMICS #7$2.50 BON11,661

The comic is OK, and a bit of step down from the TV series (unlike The Simpsons comic which has been better than the show lately) but still highly recommended for people who don't mind laughing while they read their funnybooks.

152 HAUNTED #2 (Of 4)$2.99 CHA11,628

This is the only Chaos book I am reading now, and since it's be Peter David, it's the only one that's not an excuse for tits and ass shots and tons of blood. He's got a good story going here, and he hasn't messed it up with out-of place humor. Highly recommended, and unlike most mini-series, I'm buying it as a monthly since Chaos is so horrible about both printing their stuff in trades and if they do, keeping the trades in print.

153 SHADOW REAVERS #5$2.99 BLA10,188
154 NOBLE CAUSES #1$2.95 IMA9,980

The new Jay Faerber super-team book, and with sales this low, I don't expect it to make a big splash. I like his work on Titans well enough, but not well enough o follow him into another series I have heard nothing about.

155 UNDEAD #1 (MR)*$4.99 CHA9,857
156 BAD KITTY RELOADED #4 (Of 4)$2.99 CHA9,815
157 GROO DEATH & TAXES #2 (Of 4)$2.99 DAR9,791

Groo is an odd case for me. I love the comic, but feel cheated to pay $3 for 28 pages (that's with ads). When it was with Epic and sold at the price of regular comics, it was fine, but at an inflated price and a lower page count, I just can't work up a trill for it. Call it a casualty of higher comics prices.

158 BLACK TIDE #2$2.95 IMA9,550
159 CRUSADES #11 (MR)$2.50 DC9,442

Another highly recommended book, although Kelly Jones's art isn't as good as it used to be a few years ago. I don't expect it will last much longer with sales like this, however.

160 CREED UTOPIATE #1$2.95 IMA9,404
161 TAROT WITCH O/T BLACK ROSE #12$2.95 BRO9,295
162 JADE REDEMPTION #3 (Of 4)$2.99 CHA9,267
163 POWERPUFF GIRLS #23$1.99 DC9,125
164 TALEWEAVER #5 (Of 6)$2.95 DC8,823
165 FOUR WOMEN #4 (Of 5) (MR)$2.95 DC8,814

Odd. I would think a Sam Keith mini-series would sell a lot better than this. The Maxx was about the only good thing from Image at the time it was being published, and Zero Girl was very well done. This will be a good trade paperback, but I guess his time away from comics made it so people forgot him. He's doing a Wolverine story soon, so that will make him noticable again. Too bad you have to do crap like that to sell good books.

166 OUTLAW NATION #17 8,738

I love the people on Barbelith.com. Really I do. But they are saying that this book's cancellation is a horrible thing and DC should keep publishing it with sales this low...in the last three months it has dropped from 9,600 to 8,700, and has to be losing money by this point. I like it too, but if you like a book that it down here or below and isn't from a small publisher, it's doomed.

167 SUPERMAN ADVENTURES #65 8,351

If this isn't the last issue, it's the next to last issue. Still, a pretty good run, even though it ran out of gas about issue #25.

168 GRIP STRANGE WORLD OF MEN #3 (Of 5) (MR)$2.50 DC8,077
169 USAGI YOJIMBO #54$2.99 DAR7,912
170 PLANET O/T APES #5 BLOODLINES (2 Of 3)*$2.99 DAR7,860
171 QUEEN & COUNTRY #6 (MR)7,667

Written by Greg Rucka, who seems to have abandoned novels for comics. His Detective Comics stories are great, and I'm getting the first trade of this book when it comes out, but again, why buy it in a serialized format when there will be a collected version available?

172 DRAGONBALL Z PART 5 #1 (Of 12)$2.95 VIZ7,568
173 BLADE O/T IMMORTAL #64 SKIN (1 Of 2) (MR)$2.99 DAR7,421
174 STRAY BULLETS #23 (MR)$3.50 EL7,299

It's nice to have this comic back, one of the first in the Crime Noir boom that came after Frank Miller's Sin City stuff. I prefer to buy it in books, since it never really ends, but just fades into the next story, but either format is highly recommended.

175 KNIGHTS O/T DINNER TABLE #63$2.99 KZR7,077

A great bargain, and still a lot of fun to read for gamers only. If you aren't a gamer, you'll be put off by the painfully horrible art and focus completely on people who play role playing games. The perfect example of a niche comic.

176 DUNGEONS & DRAGONS IN SHADOW OF DRAGONS #6 (Of 8)$2.99 KZR6,926
177 DUNGEONS & DRAGONS TEMPESTS GATE #2 (Of 4) (Note Price)$2.99 KZR6,850
178 CEREBUS #274$2.25 AAR6,571
179 LOVE & ROCKETS VOL 2 #4 (MR)$3.95 FAN6,496

I know it kills my Indy Comic cred to say so, but I have never much cared for Love and Rockets. It's not for lack of trying. I bought the first 8 collected books, but haven't been able to read more than about half of the first two. And, to be honest, I'm not hearing the accolades for this second series like I always did for the first.

180 ELECTROPOLIS #4$2.95 IMA6,449
181 GIRL GENIUS #6$3.95 FOG6,392

Phil Foglio's new comic. I'll buy it as a collected work, since it's bit overpriced at $4 for a 32 page comic you can be done reading in about 10 minutes.

182 DRAGONBALL PART 4 #6 (Of 10)$2.95 VIZ6,321

Wait and get them in the collected books for your kids. My son is tearing through the books, and is a huge fan of the cartoon. I don't care for it, but then again, he's not a big fan of the Ditko Spider-Man stories or Kirby's Fantastic Four stuff.

183 CANNON GOD EXAXXION #3 STAGE 1 (3 Of 8) (MR)$2.99 DAR6,260
184 TERRY MOORES PARADISE TOO #6$2.95 ABS6,000
185 SUGAR & SPIKE FACSIMILE ED$2.95 DC5,920

Now THIS is a great comic and is literally for all ages. The story of two babies who can speak to each other, but don't understand anyone around them. In a way, Rugrats lifted their premise from this, but this was done with more charm and gentle humor. Much like Peanuts, it's a kids comic for adults to enjoy. Not just highly recommended, but I honestly think if DC would reprint it and get it on newsstands, it would outsell anything else in the mainstream market.

186 RANMA 1/2 PART 10 #10 (Of 11)$2.95
187 SCOOBY-DOO #56$1.99 DC5,382
188 POISON ELVES #69$2.95 SIR5,259

*holds his head to keep the pain from getting worse* Who the royal blue fuck is buying this book? Whoever you are, stop. Now. Put the comic down and find something else. Something that looks good and doesn't read like someone's bad D&D game. Please? I'll give you a cookie...

189 SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #106$1.99 ARC5,009

It kind of amazes me that this outsells all the Archie books, since SEGA doesn't even make video game consoles anymore, and the last two they DID make bombed. Where are little kids playing Sonic, since the Saturn and Dreamcast did so poorly?

190 WARREN ELLIS STRANGE KILLINGS #1 (Of 3) (MR)$3.50 AVA4,886

A waste of paper, and I'm a Warren Ellis fan. The first two of the "Strange" mini-series were overlong and understoried. Maybe if they collected all three mini-series in a $12.95 it would be worth it, but these things seem more like IDEAS for stories, rather than stories.

Which actually outsells most of the manga being published. Draw your own conclusion, but it's a lot like how books on selling poetry to publishers outsell poetry books, OK?

204 DEMONSLAYER FUTURE SHOCK #1/2*$4.95

PLEASE stop making 1/2, 0 and -1 issues. I BEG you. They are always an excuse for the artist to print the crap he was doodling while playing video games and trying to pick up chicks in chat rooms. And if there IS a story, it's some half-assed writing school project that shows that no one knows how to write a short story anymore.

212 DISTANT SOIL #34 (Net) (Note Price)$4.95 IMA2,833

Sadly, I finally dropped this comic, as I haven't been "reading" it for a good year or so. The art is wonderful, but the story has utterly lost me. And throwing in short stories didn't help a lot.

236 BETTY & VERONICA DIGEST #127 2,157

To be honest, the Archie digests are about the best bang for the buck when it comes to comics for kids. They cost less than a regular Marvel book, run about 100 pages and have a ton of complete stories. Give 'em to kids in the back seat of the mini-van rather than installing a damn DVD system and TV.

Has anyone really ever laughed reading an Archie comic? I don't mean thinking quietly to yourself "Gee that's funny" while reading it, but actually laughed out loud so another human being could hear it? I didn't think so.

248 WARREN ELLIS STRANGE KILLINGS WRAPAROUND CVR #1 (Of 3) 1,832

I don't get why he does these books. Warren Ellis is a very good writer who does some amazing work, but his Avalon mini-series all read like something he jotted down while watching TV. And they stretch what could be a decent one-shot story into three issues. And looking at the sales, it can't be for the money.

Currently selling for $6 in Wizard, and Toddy Mac still has boxes of them in his warehouse. I guess those "shortages" that were of the comic at the time might have been a bit of a falsehood.

271 GENKI CLINIC VOL 8 #6 1,369
272 VAMPIRE PRINCESS YUI VOL 3 #6 1,369
273 DOUBLE TAKE #8 1,331

Picking up after Double Image, and I think only one issue has come out. I liked Codeflesh, and think it would have worked as a mini-series of some kind instead of half of an anthology. I still don't know why American audiences don't like anthologies, but they are pretty much a lost cause at this point.

Not too bad for a 10 year old Prestige book. The art by Alan Davis is incredibly good, and Mike W. Barr still could tell a good Batman story. Oddly enough, this was one of Barr's last comics stories after a nice run on Detective.

296 ELVIRA #105 1,029

More people were in line to get her autograph in San Diego than buy her comics. That says something right there.
