The Top 300 Selling Comic Books For April 2005

This list comes from digging through sales figures, asking too many questions and using Diamond Comics information. The snotty comments in white are from deep in Cory's sick twisted little brain. It's only partial, and Cory!! may go back and fill in the rest of the comments, but don't count on it. He's going to concentrate on making sure that he keeps up from now on, rather than deal with ones he didn't have time for when work crushed his tiny little soul.

1 NEW AVENGERS #5* $2.25 MAR 162,412

Marvel has to be pretty happy about this relaunch. Most relaunched series shoot to the top for an issue or two and then settle down where they were before the change, but this one has stayed on top with some pretty stiff competition. The series itself is a bit wonky, with the second half of the story of the first 6 issues having nothing to do with the first half, but it's still be entertaining, and Bendis shows he can handle both character interplay and action sequences in standard Marvel super-hero books well. Highly recommended

2 SUPERMAN BATMAN #18 $2.95 DC 115,305

The alternate universe hopping of the recent story arc was pretty poorly done, and ended up being more confusing that a way to show how Batman and Superman would have been with different circumstances. Now, another Supergirl story followed by a story arc to wrap everything up.

3 GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH #5 (OF 6) $2.95 DC 115,006

A continuity walk that is very well drawn, and good fun for people who care deeply about the Hal Jordan Green Lantern. This story deftly undoes the "Hal Kills Everyone" story that DC once stated was sacrosanct and would never be written away, proving that any Big Change you don't like will eventually been undone. Still this is unreadable to people with no history of the character.

4 SUPERMAN BATMAN #19 $2.99 DC 114,258
5 SUPERMAN #215 $2.99 DC 112,593

More unreadable Jim Lee comics.

6 ULTIMATES 2 #5 $2.99 MAR 103,472
7 WOLVERINE #27* $2.25 MAR 101,228

This title continues its "Big Fight Scene" story, although this one isn't quite as good as the first 6 issue arc. For super-hero fans, this is the equivelent of a Big Loud Summer movie, and for everyone else, it's a big fight scene with a LOT of characters you should know about, but don't.

8 UNCANNY X-MEN #458 $2.25 MAR 85,299

This story continues, with word that Alan Davis is leaving. Chris Claremont tends to have a writing style that people either love or are indifferent too. I've seen his bag of tricks before, and he's not really pushing himself in his writing anymore, just continuing the soap opera. This IS the lowest I have ever seen X-Men sales, however, so I wonder if, after almost 30 years, the franchise is finally running out of steam.

9 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #75 $2.25 MAR 83,940

The "Hobgoblin" story arc is one of the lesser ones in this title's history, bt it is STILL better than the average super-hero comic because Bendis is able to give us characters that we care about, and captures the essence of Spider-Man effortlessly. Still, the main plot of Harry Osborn becoming a mutatated version of the Green Goblin holds no surprises and feels like it is just going through the motions. Mildly recommended.

10 X-MEN #169 $2.25 MAR 82,793

On X-Statics, Peter Milligan was writing a sharp, funny, and insightful mutant comic that was a joy to read every month. I haven't liked a lot of his work at DC, but his work on that series was enough to give him a chance on this book. Sadly, the story has been pretty bad, and just reads like the X-Men stuff before the Grant Morrison era. Pass.

11 ULTIMATE X-MEN #58 $2.25 MAR 82,606
12 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #76 $2.25 MAR 82,244
13 X-MEN AGE OF APOCALYPSE #6 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 80,075

I hold NO nostaliga for the original AoA, and it was the stunt that finally got me to quit reading the X-Men after it being the first comic I went nuts for in 1976. This six issue mini-series (with an issue before it started and an index to help tell you who everyone was) is one that I picked up for the Chris Bachalo art, but I found it utterly unreadable. It demands that the reader remember comics and character from around a decade ago, as well as their alternate universe counterparts. This is the kind of crap that makes me cry.

OK, maybe I don't cry, but it does make me sad that there are people who look forward to crappy comics like this.

14 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #519 $2.25 MAR 78,535

Since the "Gwen's Kids" story, this comic has been on a downward spiral, and this issue, where Spider-Man and his family move in to Avengers Mansion while HYDRA is reborn accelerates the fall. The HYDRA story doesn't fit with Spider-Man, the "living in Avengers Mansion" part of it forgets that Spider-Man is all about his struggle and personal problems...sadly, I don't think anyone at Marvel understands why this is just bad storytelling.

15 X-MEN PHOENIX ENDSONG #5 (OF 5) $2.99 MAR 78,073
16 ULTIMATE SECRET #2 (OF 4) $2.99 MAR 76,328
17 ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #17 $2.25 MAR 72,207
18 YOUNG AVENGERS #3 $2.99 MAR 72,076

I was surprised that I liked this comic. It was pitched as "A writer from TV's OC writes about a new generation of super-heroes", and I think I would have rather read cereal boxes written by the members of John Byrne's sycopathic message board. However, the title has started off well, and reminds me a lot of early issues of "Thunderbolts". It won't win over non-syuper-hero fans, but for Marvel Fans, it's a solid, top tier comic. Mildly recommended.

19 TEEN TITANS #23 $2.50 DC 66,802

I'm conflicted about this comic. I LIKE it, but it's heading into Big Crossover Stories that will pretty much mean it will be unreadable on it's own. For people who are into the big DC Infinite Crisis stuff, this is part of it, and fairly well-written for that, but on it's own, it just won't work. Sorry.

20 OMAC PROJECT #1 (OF 6) $2.50 DC 65,337

The first of the mini-series that will lead into DC's next Big Crossover. On it's own, it's not horrid, and deals with a surveillance system created by Batman falling into the wrong hands. It's even self-contained. However, the whole idea of Batman being THIS powerful just rubs me wrong, and I can't really recommend it, because it makes Batman out to be more powerful than the US Government.

21 DAY OF VENGEANCE #1 (OF 6) $2.50 DC 64,856

Now, this crossover is a mess. It starts after The Spectre has started killing all the magic users in the DC universe and...well, for them I got lost and gave up. Unreadable.

22 JLA #113 $2.25 DC 64,002
23 X-MEN THE END HEROES & MARTYRS #2 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 63,005
24 BATMAN #639 $2.25 DC 62,344

OMFG! Jason Todd is back from the dead AGAIN!! This series is being written as series of connected mini-series, and I found that I pretty much have to read it as separate story arcs to get what the creative team is trying to do. In the end, other than the Big Shocking Things they are doing in the comic, it's pretty much bland super-hero stuff.

25 MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN #13 $2.99 MAR 60,542
26 SUPREME POWER #16 (MR) $2.99 MAR 55,068
27 ACTION COMICS #826 $2.50 DC 54,769

John Byrne is back on Superman. With someone else writing and an inker, his stuff comes off much better than when he does it all himself. It's better than most of the Superman stuff from the past couple of years, but I'm interested to see what happens as we go into Big Crossover Mode.

28 X-23 #5 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 54,613
29 X-MEN FANTASTIC FOUR #5 (OF 5) $3.50 MAR 51,583
30 IRON MAN #3 $2.99 MAR 51,390

Only two months late, and the next issue may well be in three or four months. And this comic is NOT good enough for wait times like that. Maybe it'll be a good trade paperback, but as a continued story, it's a waste of paper. Dear Marvel, next time you have a Big Launch, make sure that you have some issues in the can so you don't become "The House Of Comics So Late We Have To Reprint Before New Issues Come Out."

31 ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #639 $2.50 DC 49,295

Greg Rucka, who is good on other comics, just doesn't grasp how to write a good Superman story. He's upped the threat level to Superman to the point where the character seems almost unworkable, and if that's his plan, I don't see where he can go with it.

32 DAREDEVIL #72 $2.99 MAR 48,803

Another in the "Sins" story arc, which focuses on the people whose lives have been affected by Daredevil, both for the good AND bad. Another excellent issue, and highly recommended.

33 INCREDIBLE HULK #80 $2.99 MAR 48,404

Peter David's initial story arc continues, and shows that when he writes a serious story, there are few people who understand how to write super-hero comics better. Highly recommended.

34 JLA CLASSIFIED #6 $2.99 DC 48,086

Continuing the "I Can't Believe It's Not The Justice League" story by Giffen, DeMatties and Maguire. DC has made this comic "non-continuity" by subjecting the characters to changes to make them "dark and gritty" which this series was supposed to be an antidote to. So, on it's own, it is STILL one of the funniest comics on the stands, and it reads like a well scripted situation comedy involving super-heroes. Easily one of the best comics on the stands, and highly recommended.

35 FLASH #221 $2.25 DC 46,471

As Geoff Johns goes into his big "Final Arc", it continues with the good and bad that the series has had under his tenure, with solid super-hero stuff, but a feeling that "Big Things Are About To Happen" without ever happening. Mildly recommended for super-hero fans only.

36 CAPTAIN AMERICA #5 $2.99 MAR 46,010

As the 5th part of a six part story, there are some very good things in this issue, and I like the creative team, but it's very much like reading the 5th part of a 6 part novel.

37 SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #27 $2.99 MAR 45,810

The last issue, and wouldn't you know it, THIS is what I liked about Paul Jenkins's writing on the character. It's a quiet issue about Peter Parker visiting Uncle Ben's grave, and sums up what is important about Spider-Man. It's s shame that the rest of his run has been filled with silly plots, bad fight scenes and awkward scripting, because it shows that Jenkins CAN do good work on the comic. This issue, however, is Highly Recommended.

38 FANTASTIC FOUR #525 $2.99 MAR 45,561

A fill-in issue written by Karl Kessel, who has always shown a deft understanding of ALL of Jack Kibry's characters, and this is no exception. I know that JMS is coming on the comic, and the Marvel Knights FF series is by someone else, but I'd LOVE it if Marvel gave Kessel a FF book to write. Highly recommended.

39 BLACK PANTHER #3 $2.99 MAR 44,925
40 SEVEN SOLDIERS ZATANNA #1 (OF 4) $2.99 DC 43,647

First off, I love the character design of Zatanna. Top hat, Tuxedo top and fishnets? What man WOULDN'T love a woman like that? Second, Grant Morrison, my favorite comics writer, is scripting this. So, can I give it anything by my highest recommendation? No. No I can't. ALL of the Seven Soldiers mini-series have been incredibly well done and are Highly Recommended.

41 JSA #72 $2.50 DC 43,472

Finishing up a time-travel story that has been well worth reading. The hardest part of the JSA comic is to do stories that use the group's rich history without it becoming a continuity wallow, and this one tread that line more closely than other story arc, with the modern JSA teaming up with the JSA of the past. Still, it's clear, well done and highly recommended.

42 SPIDER-MAN BREAKOUT #1 (OF 5) $2.99 MAR 42,974
43 TOXIN #1 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 42,138

The child of Venom and Carnage. If I ever say that I read this, you have permission to hit me in the back of the head with a large plank of wood.

44 LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #5 $2.99 DC 41,664

This first issue of this comic that wasn't very clear. There are a LOT of characters in this comic, and Waid has created a future that is different than the Legion has been in before. Normally, he is good about giving the reader all the information they need to know what is going on, but this is the first issue that read as if he just hadn't put all the information we needed into the story. Hopefully, it's a one-time mistake and not a new trend.

45 LEX LUTHOR MAN OF STEEL #2 (OF 5) $2.99 DC 40,661
46 DETECTIVE COMICS #805 $2.99 DC 39,077

Another part of a 12 part story. If you haven't started reading it yet, just wait until it is collected.

47 PUNISHER #19 (MR) $2.99 MAR 38,753
48 SHANNA THE SHE DEVIL #3 (OF 7) $3.50 MAR 38,678

OK, this comic is just an excuse for Frank Cho to draw sexy woman and dinosaurs. And I'm all right with that. Recommended for the art, which is some of the best in comics.

49 PUNISHER #20 (MR) $2.99 MAR 38,130

This series is consistantly entertaining, as Garth Ennis has a good handle on what makes the character interesting. Good, solid action stories with little in the way of soap opera histrionics, and it reminds me a lot of the Judge Dredd stuff in England, where the insanity fo the main character just IS and isn't meant to be explored. Highly recommended.

50 SEVEN SOLDIERS KLARION THE WITCH BOY #1 (OF 4) $2.99 DC 38,123

More of the Big Grant Morrison Seven Soldiers story. And well worth finding and reading, as it is a interesting take on a character who has never really been used for other than a supporting character. Highly recommended.

51 CONAN #15 $2.99 DAR 38,086
52 NIGHTWING #107 $2.25 DC 38,061

And with the "Year One" story done, back to Devin Grayson's writing, and this is just as bad as the stuff she was doing in her buildup to #100, this time, Dick Grayson is working as an enforcer for the Mob. It doesn't read like a story that sprung forth organically from an idea, but from repeated viewings of "The Sopranos". Pass.

53 STRANGE #5 (OF 6) $3.50 MAR 36,970
54 NEW X-MEN #12 $2.99 MAR 35,779
55 GLA #1 (OF 4) $2.99 MAR 35,150

This is an odd mix...it is written as if it is a light, goofy super-hero story, and has a LOT of funny lines and such, following the adventures of some lesser super-heroes. However, there is an incredibly dark subplot that just doesn't fit in with the goofiness. I also find it pretty interesting that by the 55th comic on the list, we're getting VERY close to the line of unprofitability for Marvel, around 25,000.

56 DC COUNTDOWN TO INFINITE CRISIS #1 2ND PTG $1.99 DC 35,131

Since there were so many shipped last month, I'm sure that these mostly sold to people who wanted the "special cover" to add to their collections. The story itself is a bit of a mess, three writers, different art teams, and it meets the definition of an "Idiot Plot" where EVERYONE but Blue Beetle had to be a complete idiot for the plot to work.

57 EXILES #62 $2.99 MAR 33,965
58 EXILES #63 $2.99 MAR 33,728

The story is now going into "how do they jump around in alternate universes." There are few serialized fiction series where they show what is "behind the curtain" and the series remains worth following (for example, "X-Files", "Quantum Leap" and such). It'll be interesting to see where they go after they show that man behind the curtain causing them to jump from universe to universe to set right what once went wrong. The story itself? It's hatd to say, and it reads like a mix of good ideas and just bad plotting. It will all depend on the resolution.

59 SPACE GHOST #6 (OF 6) $2.99 DC 33,616
60 WOLVERINE SOULTAKER #3 (OF 5) $2.99 MAR 33,130
61 BATMAN GOTHAM KNIGHTS #64 $2.50 DC 31,746

I have yet to see the reason this comic is still being published. Mediocre Batman stories that tend to go on and on for issue after issue with no resolution.

62 HUNTER KILLER #2* $2.99 IMA 31,714
63 CONAN & THE JEWELS OF GWAHLUR #1 (OF 3) $2.99 DAR 31,627

I LOVE P. Craig Russel's art, and feel that he is one of the unsung masters of the comics form. However, his slight figures and classical rendering of the human body just don't work on Conan. Conan HAS to be a big, solid figure that looks as if he just up from an animal, but Russel draws him with a slight build. The story is decent enough, but the art just doesn't fit the story.

64 GREEN ARROW #49 $2.50 DC 31,403
65 ROBIN #137 $2.25 DC 30,798
66 BATMAN JEKYLL & HYDE #1 (OF 6) $2.99 DC 30,636

There are going to be a LOT of Batman mini-series over the next few months, including a couple of 12 issue mini-series. I like Batman as much as the next guy, but why aren't these stories being put into "Legends of the Dark Knight" or "Gotham Knights", which are a couple of books that NEED solid stories to0ld in a limited series type format.

67 CATWOMAN WHEN I/ROME #5 (OF 6) $3.50 DC 29,944
68 BIRDS OF PREY #81 $2.50 DC 29,832
69 JUSTICE LEAGUE ELITE #10 (OF 12) $2.50 DC 29,408
70 RUNAWAYS #3 $2.99 MAR 29,264

Sadly tumbling down the sales charts, where it will probably lodge down where it was before the relaunch. It's not as good as the first run, mostly because there are a LOT of extra characters, making it hard to get enough scenes for each character to move them forward. Still, despite that, it's still better than most of the stuff Marvel is putting out. It follows a group of teenagers who are dealing with the fact that they found out their parents were super-villains, and are now hiding out rather than being put in foster homes. A solidly entertaining super-hero team book, and Highly Recommended.
